X11 on OSX on Intel
Update: Or I’m just completely wrong. The same Optional Installs.pkg that the retail DVD has is also on the Intel DVD, you just have to scroll down.
I’ve finally got X11 running on my new iMac. Sort of.
The download from apple.com is for Panther. Though it complains about an incompatibility while installing, it turns out the incompatibility is with Tiger, not Intel.
Then I started hearing noise about there being an X11 package on the install DVD. So I look and look, and while there is an X11 SDK installed with XCode, X11 itself is absent.
It turns out that on the retail Tiger DVD, there is an Optional Installs.pkg. It will install X11 on Intel Macs. Unfortunately, that means X11 is running under Rosetta. X11’s not a stellar performer to begin with but there’s no logical reason it needs to be emulated. I want X11 for OSX for Intel.

You can install XDarwin with fink. The package is called Xorg. However, the features aren’t as great as Apple’s X11.

me too. I really want X11 on my Mactel in order to have open office up and running.
